About GPA calculations
- How is GPA calculated from letter grades?
- Each letter grade is assigned a quality point value — for example A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0, with plus and minus variants adjusting by 0.3. Your GPA is the weighted average: multiply each grade's quality points by that course's credit hours, sum all those products, then divide by the total credit hours enrolled.
- What GPA scale does this calculator use?
- This calculator uses the standard US 4.0 scale: A+ = 4.0, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0. Some institutions treat A+ as 4.3 — check your institution's specific policy.
- What do the US and UK honours classifications mean?
- US Latin honours are typically: Summa Cum Laude (3.9–4.0), Magna Cum Laude (3.7–3.89), and Cum Laude (3.5–3.69) — thresholds vary by institution. UK degree classifications map roughly to: First Class (3.7+), Upper Second / 2:1 (3.3+), Lower Second / 2:2 (2.7+), Third Class (2.0+). Always verify the exact thresholds with your institution.
- How many credit hours should I enter per course?
- Credit hours represent the weighting of a course — typically the number of hours it meets each week. A standard lecture course is usually 3 credits, a lab 1–2 credits, and some intensive courses 4–6. Use the value your institution assigns to each course on your transcript or course catalogue.
