About percentage calculations
- How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
- Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 80: 15 × 80 ÷ 100 = 12. Use the "What is X% of Y?" tab above for instant results.
- How do I find what percentage one number is of another?
- Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 25 out of 200: 25 ÷ 200 × 100 = 12.5%. Use the "X is what % of Y?" tab above.
- How do I calculate percentage change?
- Use the formula: ((New value − Original value) ÷ Original value) × 100. A positive result is a percentage increase; a negative result is a percentage decrease. For example, from 80 to 100: ((100 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = 25% increase.
- How do I work out a discount?
- To find the discount amount, use "What is X% of Y?" where X is the discount percentage and Y is the original price. Subtract that result from the original price to get the sale price. For example, 20% off £50: 20% of 50 = £10 discount, so the sale price is £40.
